A Tea Party
Strange how a teapot can represent at the same time the comforts of solitude and the pleasures of company.
Today I had the pleasure of attending a tea party at my local hospital’s Cancer Center. I could not believe the transformation of what had become of our regular meeting space. Tables were set with beautiful linens, fragile teapots, cups and saucers and fine silver adorned each place setting. Dainty tea sandwiches and delectable sweet treats were showcased on each table, and the hospital staff wore embroidered, starched white aprons. It was such a pleasant surprise to see how much care was given to make this a special event for those of us who shared a dis-ease called cancer.
When I sat down, I marveled at each person’s expression as they walked through the door. It seemed as if everyone’s moods were up-lifted. Each table sat eight people and the guests of honor fell into friendly conversation, sampling the tea and the delicate finger sandwiches and pastries. We shared our personal stories about how we came to be in this place, offered each other laughter and advice, and made new friends. It was such a wonderful bonding experience and it truly warmed my heart to feel the love and support that the hospital staff had for all who had attended.
Even though our diagnoses were different, we were fighting for our lives, too, and the unity of a common thread was the bond that tied us together for an afternoon.
Affirmation: I am thankful for opportunities to experience opportunities and meet others.
